Athens is one of the world's oldest city and the motherland of Western civilization, due to the impact of democracy and philosophy to the modern world. Today, the Greek capital is a cosmopolitan metropolis with a vast variety of monuments and cultural activities both for visitors and the local community. The city has a mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers and mild, wet winters. The fact that Athens has a nice weather is what made the city famous for its vibrant nightlife, with plenty choices for all tastes and lifestyles. The capital contains a variety of different architectural styles that creates a unique background for discovering the neighborhoods, away of the main tourist centre. The tram from Syntagma Square leads to the beaches to the south which are ideal for swimming or just drinking coffee by the sea, as the Greeks often do. If you are a person with special needs, the city is not organised very well for persons with a disability. Although, the locals are more willing to help than you imagine. Try to remember that strikes in Greece can be spontaneous and be patient and cautious. Don't be a tourist, be a voyager. Take your time to understand the local bohemian lifestyle and maybe you will forget your worries, even in these tough times.
