History

Pre 20th

Kos town has been inhabitated constantly since the 3rd millenium BC up until today. Traces of habitation have been found in almost all areas of the island, mainly in the north east side. Between 2000-1600 BC Kos acquires Minoan character, while after 1450 BC it is influenced by the Mycenaean civilisation. In the decades that followed Kos island made many friends and enemies, created alliances and participated in wars. Many north tribes came to conquer her. Again like in most islands of the Aegean Sea, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, Venetians and Italians passed by the island. Hippocrates, the father of modern western medicine was born in Kos.

When to go

Kos is a big island with almost 30.000 inhabitants so even in wintertime you won't feel alone. Of course, it's better to go at summer so you can also swim.

Getting there

By Air

There are frequent daily flights from Athens Airport to Kos. Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines operate on this route.

By Boat

At least 2 boats per day depart from the port of Piraeus (at least in the summer period) and arrive after 11-14 hours to the port of Kos.
