When people think of Greece, images of the Acropolis and white, rocky islands are usually the first things that spring to mind. If you're interested in the latter, you need to head out to the Aegean to visit some of its famous islands; out of all of your many options, Mykonos has to be among the very best. From its thriving nightlife and sun-kissed beaches to its remarkable historical and cultural attractions, Mykonos is an excellent place to spend at least part of a Greek sojourn. The basics of visiting Mykonos are outlined below.

History

Researchers believe that Mykonos has been inhabited, in one form or another, since at least 3000 BC. Little is known about its original inhabitants. Sometime during the 11th century BC, though, the Ionians settled the tiny island. For many centuries, it barely squeaked by with an economy that was based largely around fishing and boat building. Things changed dramatically for Mykonos during the 1950s, when the world at large discovered its many charms. From that point forward, it has been a wildly popular tourist destination.

When to go

There's no "wrong time" to visit Mykonos. That being said, there are times of the year that you might want to avoid. Most notably, the island is at its hottest and most crowded in July and August. By visiting in May, June, September or October, you can enjoy cooler temperatures, cheaper accommodations and thinner crowds.

Getting there

The vast majority of the people who visit Mykonos arrive there via ferryboat. The most popular departure point is Piraeus, which is about seven miles outside of downtown Athens. Ferryboat rides from Piraeus can take anywhere from four to five hours. Another departure point is Rafina, which is especially convenient for those who are arriving from the Athens airport. In either case, most ferries arrive on Mykonos at its new port, Tourlus.

It's also possible to get into Mykonos via plane. Flights from Athens are frequent and only take about thirty minutes. During tourist season, flights also come in directly from several major European cities, including London, Berlin and Amsterdam.

Getting around

On Mykonos you can get around by scooter, ATV, car, or bus. A sophisticated bus network, which takes you to virtually any point of the island.

Additionally taxis operate at constant rate. In the evening, it can be nearly impossible to find a taxi. You can wait hours at the taxi queue in town.

There are now two ferry terminals at Hora (Mykonos), the main sea port on the island. If you are on foot and leaving the island, be certain whether your ferry leaves from the old port (the nearest one to the main section of town) or the New Port (about 10 km to the north).

There is also a third port from whence boats to and from Delos depart and arrive, but most travellers won't confuse this with the ferry landings.
