History
The first traces of human presence in Agios Nikolaos go back to 2100 BC, according to ancient findings. The Mirambello Gulf was thought to be a very important place, while in the mountains behind the city, ancient god Zeus was born. After that the area developed commercially because of the ports and the agricultural life. Arabs, Genoveses, Venetians and Ottomans came by the area.

The weather is sunny quite often in Agios Nikolaos. The city lies in the east part of Crete and you can visit all year around. Of course, if you want to swim, it's better to go from May to September.

Elounda, Kritsa, Siteia, Herakleion, Malia and Hersonnisos are easly accessed with a regular bus service
Scooters: Readily available. Wearing of crash helmets is COMPULSORY.Do not ruin your holiday by receiving a large fine.
Quads: Not designed for use on road. Cause traffic congestion and impatience leading to many accidents and occasional deaths. Think very carefully before hiring one and using it on the roads.
Car Hire: Best idea for getting around. You will not normally need a 4 x 4 to negotiate the roads, most of which are mettalled. Some places and rental properties are less accessible. Beware of damage to the underside of the hire car on rough tracks.*
