Top five things to see and do in London, UK
Tate Modern
The Tate Modern is a modern art museum on the south bank of the Thames, opposite St Paul's catherdal, that features some of the most ground-breaking contemporary artist of today. From photography to oil paintings and even socio-cultural conferences the Tate Modern is a hub for modern-day culture. The exhibtions change every month so there is always something new to see, and above all there is no entrance fee. www.tate.org.uk
Boat Trip down the Thames
These boat tours are great as there are so many incredible tourist sites to be seen from the river: Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, London Eye, MI5 headquarters, Canary Wharf is just naming a few of them. It is obviously far more pleasant is the sun is shining, but I still really recomend this tour even if the sun is not out, as it allows people to see the sites from the river which is a completely new perspective that most tourist will not have the chance of seeing. www.citycruises.com
Natural History Museum
Along with the British Museum, the Natrual History Museum (NHM) is one of the most well known museums of London. In the heart of the Royal Borough of Kennsington and Chelsea, the NHM offers an incredible insight into all sides of human exisitence, from the Jurassic age to our modern era. Once you have visited the museum I suggest you either go for a classic British cream tea or from a couple of pints of British Ale in one of the many tea houses or pubs in the streets around Knightsbridge. Albert Hall, Hyde Park, Harrods and the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) are also worth a visit if you are in the area. www.nhm.ac.uk
The Saatchi Gallery
Slightly further south, but still in the same opulent borough of London is Sloan Square. Just off Sloan Square is the recently renovated Saatchi Gllery. Bought by the Saatchi brothers, they now use the space to exhibit breath-taking and occasionally shocking contemporary art. One fascinating piece (permanent piece), is found in a room bellow ground level, which many people miss. I will not give it away, but it involves a commodity that is essential in our day-to-day life and that we fight wars over. www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk
Going Out!
This is really hard as there are so many cool places to eat and drink in London, some cheap, some expensive, some traditional, some more daring! I will give you my favourite areas and some placed I like to go on a night out.
North London: Angel & Upper Street
Get out the Tube (Underground) at Angel on the Northern line. This area is full of bars, restaurans and clubs and is the best place to go out in North London. Walk up Upper Street and the choices are staggering. From Latin bars to English pubs, there is something to suit everyone.
East London: Hoxton & Shoreditch
This area of London is fast becoming the centre of cultural and artistic movement. A melting pot of social, racial and professional backgrounds makes it a very unique place to go out. Around Hoxton square there are many bars and restaurants, for clubs the Shoreditch area is slightly more edgy than most places and is definately worth checking out.
